Vlogging

How to choose a vlogging camera

The features that make filming yourself easier — a screen that faces you, a mic input, a wide lens and stabilisation — plus the four kinds of vlogging camera.

A good vlogging camera is one you'll actually carry, that lets you see yourself, and that records clear sound. Resolution comes a long way down the list.

The two non-negotiables

Our vlogging cameras list uses one simple, published rule:

  1. A screen that can face you — vari-angle (side-hinged), flip-up, or a front screen on action cameras — so you can check framing and focus while you talk.
  2. A way to plug in a microphone — usually a 3.5 mm socket. Built-in mics pick up handling noise and room echo; even a small on-camera mic makes a big difference.

Pocket gimbal cameras such as the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 are included too, because the lens itself turns to face you.

A wide enough lens

Held at arm's length, a normal lens crops your face tightly and hides the background. Look for a wide field of view:

With interchangeable-lens cameras, the kit lens decides this. On APS-C bodies, remember the crop factor (see sensor sizes explained).

Stabilisation: three different things

  • In-body (sensor-shift) stabilisation moves the sensor to cancel shake — e.g. Sony ZV-E1, Fujifilm X-S20, Panasonic LUMIX S9.
  • Electronic stabilisation crops and shifts the video frame. Sony lists Active Mode on the ZV-E10 II and ZV-1 II; action cameras rely on it (RockSteady, HyperSmooth, FlowState).
  • A mechanical gimbal physically steadies the camera — built into the Osmo Pocket 3, or added with a separate gimbal.

Weight

If it's heavy, it stays at home. Light options in our database include the Sony ZV-1 II (292 g), Panasonic LUMIX G100D (346 g) and Fujifilm X-M5 (355 g), all with battery and card. Use the weight filter on the vlogging list.

Don't forget audio and light

A small microphone or LED light often improves a vlog more than a camera upgrade. See our vlogging accessories for what to check.
