Which camera should I buy?

Answer as many questions as you like. We score every camera in our database with simple, visible rules — no sponsored placements.

01 What will you mostly shoot?
02 What do you point it at?
03 How experienced are you?
04 Which budget band?

Bands are our own labels based on where each camera sits in its maker's range — we don't quote prices because they change daily.

05 How much size and weight will you carry?
06 Must-haves (optional)

How the scoring works

  • Must-haves are strict: a camera is left out if its maker's specs don't confirm the feature (so "not stated" counts as no).
  • Subject: +4 if we've tagged the camera as a good fit for that kind of photography (you can see the tags on each camera page).
  • Budget band: +3 for the same band, +1 for the next band, −3 for two bands away.
  • Photos vs video: mostly photos +2 for a viewfinder; mostly video +2 for a forward-facing screen with a mic input (+1 for 4K); both +2 for a viewfinder and a screen that faces you.
  • Experience: first camera +2 if tagged as a sensible first camera; confident users +1 for high-end bodies.
  • Size: "as small as possible" +3 under 450 g, +1 up to 600 g, −2 over 750 g; "a balance" +2 for 400–750 g.
  • Action cameras lose 2 points unless you chose adventure filming.

This is a starting point, not advice tailored to you. Try cameras in a shop if you can — how a camera feels in your hand matters.
